Quo Vadis: Charting Our Course

Heather ALLEN

When I was 15 years old, I came across a phrase that resonated so deeply it helped
shape my formative years: “Quo Vadis?” Two Latin words that simply mean, “Where are
you going?” Call me an eager teenager, call me a word nerd, but the meaning those
words held was profoundly exciting to me.

I scribbled them (in nice, neat handwriting, mind you) onto the silhouette of an airplane
cut from yellow construction paper and taped it at eye level onto the gold frame of the
1980s-style sliding mirrored closet doors in my bedroom. Each morning as I opened that
door to get dressed, and each evening as I opened it to game-plan the next day, I was
reminded of the opportunity we have to accomplish something great. I loved the daily
challenge of answering that question and allowing it to shape my day: Where am I
going? How will I get there?

It shifted my focus from the minutiae of my day to defining high-level goals and allowing
those to guide my actions. It’s easy to get caught up in endless to-do lists and live
moment to moment. But I realized early on that every day was my opportunity to
intentionally shape that series of single moments. I learned that every action I took
would either propel me closer to what I was reaching for or veer me that much farther
away; keeping an eye on the big picture was what truly mattered. Not only did those two
words give me daily direction, but they taught me a vital lesson: unless we define where
we are going, we cannot possibly know if we are on course.

From a teenage bedroom to a multi-location company, that principle hasn’t changed. In
our industry, it’s easy to get lost in the day-to-day mechanics of what we do—the
queues, the specs, the materials, the timelines, and the output. But ultimately, it is not
what we do, it is why we do it that matters.
Just like an airplane that relies on a
constant North Star to chart its course and make adjustments, the answer to our Quo
Vadis is encapsulated in our core values and stands as the “why” that drives the
precision and care we put into every project.

But our true potential is unlocked when we look beyond our own walls.
When a customer brings us a need, they are on a journey of their own. They have their
own quo vadis. Imagine the impact we can have on the world if we consider where we
are going, and come to fully understand where our customers are trying to go. When we
understand their destination—their “why”—we stop being just a vendor. We become a
critical navigator in their success.

As we tackle a new month, I encourage us all to ask ourselves: Quo vadis? Let’s keep
our eyes on our North Star, and let’s help our customers reach theirs.
